The Challenge
Our client Thurlow Nunn was due to construct their largest car showroom to date for the Vauxhall brand in Milton Keynes. This 2-storey steel structure was to feature metal skin external cladding and Vauxhall’s signature Delta architecture. There were many challenges to overcome including poor ground, planning and environmental considerations.
The Solution
CS2 was instructed to act as Employers Agent on this development. CS2 provided strategic advice relating to the sites desiccated clay that facilitated the acquisition of the land for the facility. Thereafter CS2, acting as Employers Agent, oversaw the production of the building’s performance specification. A key strategy was to appoint the principle contractor so that they could contribute with their expertise and experience into the design process, most significantly offering actual cost and programme options for the client’s consideration. Notably this also allowed the clients own contracting division to price and thereafter be engrossed into the project on the steelwork and cladding works packages.
The building, located in a very prominent location on the gateway into Milton Keynes makes a considerable architectural statement The building was constructed on time and to budget despite having to source a completely alternative solution for surface water attenuation during the construction process driven by significant redevelopment of the local highway infrastructure. The creation of an excellent working relationship between the design team, client and statutory bodies facilitated a quick solution.
