The Challenge

Before acquiring Lawrence Hall, Westminster, Westminster School required pre-acquisition surveys to be undertaken; highlighting construction techniques needed and costs to repair the building fabric.

The Solution

CS2 acted on behalf of the purchaser of Lawrence Hall, which was designed by Murray Easton and Howard Robertson as a new exhibition hall for the Royal Horticultural Society in 1928.  The design of the building was unusual in that used reinforced concrete to create a parabolic arch structure; the arches acting as continuous horizontal girders to support four tiers of clerestory windows.  CS2’s knowledge of early C19 construction techniques helped to identify issues relating to the repair and longevity of the building fabric elements including building costs for replacement of major items.  The inspection was conducted discretely and in confidence so as not to cause alarm to the building occupiers.  Our client subsequently completed the acquisition.
